In October 2010, I returned to Arashiyama in western Kyoto and the famous Togetsukyo Bridge. Just south of the bridge is a quiet boat landing where I boarded a small private boat bound for Hoshinoya - Kyoto's great Urban Resort. Once the property of a wealthy Kyoto merchant Ryoi Suminokura, the retreat became a Japanese inn more than 100 years ago. After more than 30 years I returned to this magnificent setting on the banks of the river in the dramatic Oigawa River gorge and fell in love again with all that makes Kyoto so special...continue.
